Kite aerial photography combines two things I enjoy - kite flying, which takes me back to those blissful, carefree days when I was a kid, and outdoor photography, which I've loved since my college days. One of my favorite places to be is on the beach, next to the glittering sea, with my toes in the sand and the warm, soothing ocean breeze in my face.

The primary kite I use is the Delta Super Kite, which is a strong, stable, single line fishing kite from New Zealand. At over 6.2 feet wide, it packs a lot of lift and easily flies in wind speeds of just 12mph, even with two cameras attached to it. I use a wind forecasting app called Windy to identify the best locations, days of the week, and times of the day to fly.

The Pentax digital cameras that I attach to my kite can spin around a full 360 degrees, twisting and turning however the wind chooses as they automatically take a picture every 10 seconds. After a fun and relaxing kite flying session, I scroll through the pictures pulled from my cameras' memory cards on my laptop and get to experience the discovery of what my kite "saw" while it was dancing high in the sky.

The vast majority of the pictures I take are during the daytime, however I've also been fortunate enough to capture some amazingly unique nighttime kite aerial photos during Independence Day fireworks shows - they are truly out of this world!
